Total Gym Exercises – Hip and Glute Workout

Often in our mission to train the “vanity” muscles that we expose in T-shirts, we forget about the biggest and strongest muscle in our body – the gluteus maximus (or glutes). We rely on our glutes for every day functions – from sitting, to walking and running. Strong glutes can also help stabilize the pelvis and align the spine to improve posture and even alleviate back pain.

Try these hip and glute exercises on Total Gym to build a stronger dairy aire!

The editor, Becky Maverick, reviewed GRAVITY for CBI’s new “Unbound” blog.

Check out what Becky had to say about her GRAVITY workout at Boston Sports Club’s Downtown Crossing location here.

Exercise Smarter: Eight Great Fitness Myths Exposed

Remember the “telephone” game we all played as kids?

Someone whispered a message to another, and that message was passed down to many others.  Somehow, though, by the time the message finally reached you, it was completely distorted.

That same thing seems to happen with diet and fitness information. Whether it’s the latest workout trend featured in a magazine or a new diet promoted on TV, by the time your friends tell you about it, the original message often gets so muddled that you’re left utterly confused about what to eat or the best way to work out in the gym.

I’ve lined up a panel of fitness and nutrition professionals to help debunk some common fitness myths to help keep you focused on your exercise goals – whether it’s to lose weight, get in shape for a race or just live a healthier life.

Let’s crack these eight great fitness myths wide open.

Benefits of Functional Exercise

Functional fitness It’s Fitness Wisdom Wednesday!

Today, I want to explore the topic of “functional fitness” since many people have questions about what it is, what it can do for their body and how it is different from weight training?

Functional exercise prepares you for the day-to-day challenges of living an active life, whether it’s lifting a bag of groceries, standing up from a chair or maintaining proper posture. It also lays a foundation for sport specific training.

Weight training on single station machines isolates muscle groups and involves an artificial range of joint motion. Functional exercise recruits multiple muscle groups at once, working through a range of motion that mimics or replicates the normal motions of the body. Single station machines are useful for strengthening a single muscle group at a time, but are not as effective at preparing the muscles for performance. Functional exercises not only strengthen single muscle groups, but also train multiple muscle groups to improve performance—all in the same exercise!

Conveniently, many of you have an all-in-one functional training tool at home … your Total Gym! Check out more frequently asked questions about exercising on Total Gym here.
