Fitness Wisdom Wednesday – Extending Your Reach

As promised in my December blog, here are two exercises for your Total Gym exercise repertoire that utilize the Leg Pulley System cable attachments (for Total Gym XLS model click here).

  • Kneeling Forward Chest Press
  • Kneeling Forward Overhead Triceps Extension

If you did not read last month’s blog, you astute trainers and exercisers are probably wondering how my favorite client (my wife Elba) can perform these exercises without the cable pulleys topping out?  This is a great application of the cable extensions that come with the leg pulleys.  By using them to extend the length of the arm pulleys, you can be creative and add to your exercise library.

I love the proprioception challenge required in the Kneeling Forward position.  In addition, it requires functional recruitment of the core stabilization muscles to create an anchor for balance and stability.  The difference between having a “strong core” and knowing how to use the core functionally is a concept I try to teach all my clients, especially my golfers.  But be very cautious as this is a challenging position and requires good balance, body control and body awareness.  Be sure to practice at a lower level on your Total Gym as it is a little tricky getting into and out of the position safely.

I look forward to seeing what exercises you create when applying the extension cables to the arm pulleys! Leave us a comment below to share your new exercises.

Happiness and health in 2011!

A History with Total Gym & Sparring with Chuck Norris

The New Year is a great time to refresh and recharge! We want to inspire you to reach your fitness goals with testimonials from fellow Total Gym users. 2011 marks our 37th year in business and we can’t thank you enough for your loyalty all these years!!

“My father purchased the Total Gym 25+ years ago. I used it in high school. He again purchased a new Total Gym 7 years ago. In January 2010, I started using the Total Gym once again. I started at 378 pounds [and] today I am 276 pounds. Thank you for this wonderful Total Gym. I am now ready to get one for my house.” Edward Marsh.

Yesterday our CEO Tom Campanaro did an interview on BisTalk Radio AM 1000 KCEO to talk about the past and future of our company (BIG announcement coming February 1). Turns out the host Bob Ryan (pictured below) has owned a Total Gym for 10 years, which he still uses today. He also shared an interesting Chuck Norris story. Bob actually sparred against Chuck Norris when he was a teenager and a green belt in karate. At the end of the match, Bob walked away with a swift sidekick to the ribs and a broken bone in his right hand. To this day he is proud to say he went up against Chuck Norris (no hard feelings)!

Fitness Wisdom Wednesday: Increase Lower Body Strength & Flexibility

Hi! I’m Lee Stover, a GRAVITY personal trainer and ballroom dancing fitness expert with Performance Enhancement Institute located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In today’s video, I demonstrate 3 exercises on my Total Gym GTS that I use in my weekly workout regimen to increase my lower body strength and flexibility. The beauty of Total Gym is it allows you to stretch and strengthen muscles at the same time!

These 3 exercises are PLYO-SQUAT variations. To execute the first exercise, you will need to bring your knees to your chest during your jump. The second requires you to bring your chest and arms between your legs as you jump. You can also tap your heels together. The last exercise includes a split jump during the jumping motion.

These exercises improve the spring in your legs which is great for dancing swing, jive or samba. These exercises are not limited to ballroom dancers. Athletes competing in sports that require elevation such as football, basketball or soccer will also benefit from these Total Gym-inspired exercises.

Note: Do not try these exercises until you are comfortable performing basic squat jumps on Total Gym.

Keep dancing, tackling, shooting, kicking or whatever activity you enjoy!
