Fitness Wisdom Wednesday: Core Golf Fitness

Hello Total Gym golfers and Total Gym trainers with golfing clients!

The 2011 Master’s Golf Tournament, which many consider the kick-off to the golfing season, is coming up in April. So my next couple of blog posts will focus on utilizing the Total Gym to improve your – or your clients’ – golf mechanics to get into pro form!

Today’s exercise is an overhead shoulder press on Total Gym. In the video below, I demonstrate a great alternative to the shoulder press that I learned in my Total Gym GRAVITY training course, which is taught inverted and prone (or lying face down) on the glideboard. By utilizing the principle of “line of pull” that my fearless GRAVITY Personal Training educator Jeff Groh strongly emphasized, we are able to do this seated forward as demonstrated in the video

This exercise will help your golf game in the following 3 ways:

  1. Hit the Ball Farther: A strong, functional core allows you to transfer the power from your legs to the upper body to generate more club head speed.
  2. Improve Your Consistency: During this exercise, focus on emulating the spine angle of your golf swing. This will train your core to stabilize this angle so you can hold it constant throughout your golf swing until the end of your follow through. Without a stable, constant spine angle, it is very difficult to get back squarely to the ball at impact.
  3. Protect Your Back from Aches, Pains or Injury: Having functional core strength AND core endurance is crucial to protect your spine from the vigor of the golf swing. As Keith Kleven, Tiger Wood’s physical therapist, points out, “Every time you swing the club, seven to eight times the weight of your body is directed into your spine.” That is a lot of torque happening during a round of 18 holes!

Until next month golfers! Hit ‘em straight!

Athletic Business Newswire Blog: Total Gym Has My Total Respect

From the Athletic Business Newswire Blog on Friday, February 18:

By James McPartland, principal of the JMac Performance Group, a management consulting firm in Coto de Caza, Calif.

In my line of work, I spend a considerable amount of time with CEOs, executives and entrepreneurs who are working to unlock the potential in their people and business. On occasion, I get to spend time with leaders who have an infectious passion and commitment for their work, primarily because it aligns with their life’s purpose. When I come across this type of a person and company, I find myself wanting to spread the word and support their work.

The company Total Gym is the consumer market’s longest running fitness product infomercial, with $1.5 billion in sales in just over a decade. Their commercial business has an incredible following in the physical therapy, personal trainer and studio segments. It’s a global business. What impresses me most is the man behind Total Gym, Tom Campanaro, and the story behind his amazing journey. To meet Tom is to observe a man who truly walks his talk of taking personal responsibility for health. Every person who takes one of Tom’s personal development seminars, which are geared toward creating an amazing life, leaves the session touched and inspired.

Of course, no one person does this kind of thing alone, and Tom is the first to point to his incredible wife, Joy, as deserving the real credit for the success of their business. And with an eye to the future, the addition of a seasoned executive in Randy Bergstedt will continue to help propel Tom further forward in completing his life’s mission.

Tom embodies the type of leader who is in this business for a higher purpose — he’s a man of strong faith who understands that he was put here to serve a purpose and promote the platform of getting people personally involved in leading healthy and productive lives. Take a look at what he is doing, glean some lessons from his entrepreneurial journey, and consider his expanding product line when looking at doing something special for your customers or even for yourself.

Tara’s Friday Bite – What Should I Buy Organic?

In a perfect world the answer to this question would be everything! However, organic foods can cost significantly more, which can be a limiting factor for all of us. Yes, nutritionists have budgets, too. A quick rule of thumb when deciding where to spend your money is to start at the top of the food chain and work your way down. Use this chart as a reference of where to spend and where to save:

Animal Products

If you are going to spend your money on one thing make sure you are buying organic meat and dairy. In order for an animal product to be labeled organic it cannot receive antibiotics or growth hormones. It also must be fed vegetarian grain that was grown without chemicals and come from a mother who was fed the same grain during the end of her pregnancy.

Produce Where You Eat the Skin

When produce is sprayed with pesticides it naturally hits the skin first and then soaks into the fruit or vegetable. Therefore produce where you eat the skin will give you a double dose of pesticides. Always choose organic when buying these “Dirty Dozen” – peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, grapes, spinach, lettuce and potatoes.

Produce Where You Peel the Skin

Produce with thicker skin is less likely to absorb the pesticides and you will discard the skin before eating.  Here are some foods that you are safe to buy conventionally: asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, cabbage, kiwi, mango, onions, papaya and pineapple.

Grains

Most grains have been shown to be very low in pesticides, with the exception of rice. So spend a little extra on organic rice and save your money on everything else!

Ask Dr. Salada – Is it safe to work out when I’m sick?

We are pleased to introduce our newest contributor, Dr. Elizabeth Salada. Each month, Dr. Salada will answer your medical questions and offer her advice for living a healthier and fitter life. Read her answer to a subscriber’s question about working out when sick.

Question: How sick is too sick to work out? Will working out help me get better faster or will it prolong my illness?

Answer: When you are ill, it’s best to listen to your body when it comes to working out. If you have a fever, body aches, have been vomiting or have had a significant diarrheal illness, you really should rest and stay well hydrated. Short walks are OK but anything that elevates your heart rate for longer than a few minutes is not a good idea. Over stressing your body when it is trying to fight an illness will just prolong your recovery. It’s best to wait until your energy level has recovered completely before returning to exercise, especially aerobic activity as that can be dangerous for your heart. Always check with your doctor if you have had an unusual illness or are unsure about when to resume your workouts. Stay well and you will be able to continue working out to your heart’s content. Until next time!
