Core Golf Fitness: Increase Your Range of Motion

Hello Total Gym team and fellow golfers!

We had some fun at the IHRSA fitness convention in San Francisco last week. As part of the GRAVITY Master Trainer team, I helped debut the new Total Gym equipment and what a reception they got! In honor of Total Gym’s new product launch, I’ve included a famous celebrity in this week’s video …

Today’s golf fitness tip focuses on Increasing Your Range of Motion (ROM). This is the quickest way to increase your club head speed and gain distance. In addition, if you have more ROM in your hips and shoulders, you will have a more compact swing with less arm movement necessary. Thus, you will improve your consistency as it will be easier for you to get the club face back to the ball squarely.

Remember, of all the components of fitness, the one that ALL good golfers have in common is FLEXIBILITY! Although some pros and low handicappers have a resistance training program to increase their strength, I promise that not one of them would trade an ounce of strength if it compromised their ROM! As famous golf instructor and Tiger Woods former swing quote Butch Harmon said, “Tiger hit the ball farther when he was wiry.”

When you watch the upcoming Master’s Tournament, pay close attention to how much ROM the pros attain through their hips and shoulders. This week’s Total Gym exercise will truly help you swing like the pros!

Hit em’ straight,
JayDee

We also had 100+ B.O.B.s (Butts on Boards) on the new equipment. We are hitting goals far and wide and proud to be Total Gym!

Fighting Soreness with Magnesium

We’ve all felt it.  You start a new workout routine.  After the first day you are feeling tired, but also proud of yourself and feeling great!  Then you wake up the next morning and can hardly move.  You spend the entire day dreading getting in and out of the car and hoping that you don’t have to grab anything from the top shelf.  Some soreness is always to be expected when you are pushing yourself while working out but excessive soreness could be a sign of a diet low in magnesium.

Magnesium is “the relaxer” of the mineral world and is the 2nd most deficient mineral in the modern diet.  Particularly diets high in processed foods and alcohol.  Here are three ways you can increase the amount of magnesium in your system and help fight your soreness:

  1. Eat More Magnesium Rich Foods – these include beans, seeds, spinach, soy milk, salmon and halibut.
  2. Supplement with Magnesium Citrate – If you choose to take a magnesium supplement choose a Magnesium Citrate with Calcium and Vitamin D.  Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin D all work together as a team and help the body utilize each other.  Taking them together will help ensure your body will absorb the nutrients and make the most of the supplements you are putting in your body.
  3. Soak in Magnesium – after a particularly tough workout I suggest taking a soak in Epsom Salts.  Epsom Salt is essentially magnesium that you dissolve into a warm bath.  The magnesium will soak through your skin into your muscles and help reduce soreness immediately!

Of course, Magnesium won’t cure you on its own.  Always make sure that you stay hydrated, focus on your post-workout meal timing, stretch and, most importantly STICK WITH IT!  It’ll get better, I promise!

“I’ve had my total Gym XLS for a little over 5 years now… Total Gym replaced my trips to the gym to work out. It is a great piece of equipment. If you’re thinking about purchasing one, you won’t be disappointed. This is not a paid advertisement for the Total Gym, just a user that loves his.” ~ @David

“Ok, I am going to sound like an advertisement for a moment. The Total Gym XLS is no joke. Make fun of Chuck Norris and Wesley Snipes if you will, I use it and love it. As of right now I have lost 22 pounds and my body fat is at 17.8%. I am seeing muscles I haven’t seen in 25 years. All I have to say is the Total Gym Rocks! (Disclaimer) This is not a paid advertisement for the Total Gym but just a user that is super happy with it.” ~ @Don

“After having all these kids, it’s time for me to take care of me. This machine is great. My husband laughed when he seen it, he thought it would fall apart. Now I have to kick him off so I can take my turn. Love it.” ~ @Deleyna

“I have the Total Gym XL, had it for years. Still looks and works great! Its the best! With this machine and 2 twenty pound weights, I went from 227 to 145, size 38 pants to size 30 ☺ No bulls**t! It works and its easy to use!” ~ @Shween James
