Ask Dr. Salada: Why do I feel flushed 2 minutes into a workout?

Today’s health question comes from a Total Gym Facebook Fan:

Q:  “Why do I feel heat coming from my face after only two minutes on the Total Gym? ~ Evangelist

A: The reason that your face feels hot just a few minutes into a workout is because the Total Gym is such an effective piece of equipment that you immediately notice the common effects of exercise after starting your routine. Exercise naturally causes a rise in the body’s temperature and blood pressure. In response to this normal reaction, the blood vessels in our body dilate as a way for us to dissipate heat. The blood vessels in our face are very close to the skin’s surface, so as we work out, the face can feel warm and even look “flushed” in response to exercise. Because of the heat generated during exercise, it’s important to drink plenty of water and dress comfortably to keep the body cool. Of course, always check with your doctor if your face feels hotter than normal, or if you get more flushed that usual during your exercise session. These could be signs that your blood pressure is too high or that you should be evaluated before continuing with your exercise routine. Always check with your doctor if you have any concerns about your exercise program.

Keep enjoying your Total Gym and here’s to achieving “the best of health!”

Until next time,
Elizabeth Salada, MD

Memories of Total Gym Summit 2010: Highlight Video

I love a memorable trip. You leave swearing you’ll never forget the sites seen or conversations had; but over time, you get settled back into work and daily routines and you find the once vivid memories have started to fade. That’s why I love documenting trips with photos and video to take me back to that happy place!

Back in October 2010, we held our Total Gym Global Summit in Paestum, Italy to introduce the new Total Gym product line to our international distributors and GRAVITYTrainers, with over 20 countries represented. The four-day event was equally FUN as it was educational. Thankfully our Video Production Editor Brian Rose was there to document it all! Here’s a look at the “fun” side of Total Gym:

Scott and Barbi Jackson are “Real Life” Changers

“Real life fitness” is the name of the game for Scott and Barbi Jackson—which also happens to be the name of their training studio in Nevada City, CA. At Real Life Fitness, the married duo has a mission to help people, who are not being served by the big box gym, to find a fitness program that meets their needs and abilities. Real Life Fitness caters to special populations, such as new exercisers who are intimidated by the gym, the 75-year-old asthma sufferer, people in wheelchairs or who use walkers and the extremely obese, to name a few.

“Most people who come here wouldn’t go to a gym,” said Barbi. “We started off as a mobile service, training people who were too uncomfortable exercising in public. When Scott decided to open the studio, we didn’t have any reason to think we wouldn’t continue to serve this population. Our niche was private, appointment-only sessions. We are a true personal training studio—there aren’t a lot of those.”

Real Life Fitness discovers Total Gym

Barbi says the Total Gym GRAVITY program fits perfectly into her facility’s “real life fitness” model because people of all fitness levels feel good working out on the Total Gym incline bodyweight trainer.

“It’s totally comfortable and smooth, and there are so many different things we can do,” added Barbi. “The Total Gym is so versatile and because of the controlled instability of the moving glideboard, it keeps so many muscle groups engaged at one time. The beauty of the Total Gym is the benefit of changing up the workout so you’re not working the muscle groups the same way each time.”

With GRAVITY, the Jackson’s clients get to do a small group activity with personalized attention in a clean, quiet studio that doesn’t feel like a gym.

Eventually the Jacksons were able to take over the rest of the building they currently owned. They expanded and purchased six Total Gym GTS commercial units to offer GRAVITYGroup and GRAVITYPilates sessions in a specially-dedicated space. They also purchased a motorized Total Gym PowerTower for use in their personal training room, along with a Power Plate, Bowflex and a Keiser functional trainer.

Making fitness appeal to all populations

Barbi says it’s easy to forget what it’s like to not have confidence in your physical abilities.

“For our group, their body has not been a source of pride or confidence,” said Barbi. “Because of the Total Gym’s myriad levels of movement and adjustments, I can make almost anybody feel safe, capable and successful on it.”

In January, Real Life Fitness launched “The New You Challenge,” a 6-week indoor circuit program with 14 exercise stations, including Total Gym.

For clients who travel, the Jacksons offer a drop-in class or a monthly unlimited membership for all Real Life Fitness classes. They also created the “Challenge Class,” a station-based workout for 12 to 13 participants designed to get people together in a social setting and seeing results.

The Jacksons have maximized their current space to offer GRAVITY Training and the Total Gym has made it possible. For more information about Real Life Fitness, visit www.reallifefitness.net. To find a GRAVITY facility near you, hop onto our GRAVITY Network here.
