Ask Dr. Salada: Why do I feel flushed 2 minutes into a workout?

Today’s health question comes from a Total Gym Facebook Fan:

Q:  “Why do I feel heat coming from my face after only two minutes on the Total Gym? ~ Evangelist

A: The reason that your face feels hot just a few minutes into a workout is because the Total Gym is such an effective piece of equipment that you immediately notice the common effects of exercise after starting your routine. Exercise naturally causes a rise in the body’s temperature and blood pressure. In response to this normal reaction, the blood vessels in our body dilate as a way for us to dissipate heat. The blood vessels in our face are very close to the skin’s surface, so as we work out, the face can feel warm and even look “flushed” in response to exercise. Because of the heat generated during exercise, it’s important to drink plenty of water and dress comfortably to keep the body cool. Of course, always check with your doctor if your face feels hotter than normal, or if you get more flushed that usual during your exercise session. These could be signs that your blood pressure is too high or that you should be evaluated before continuing with your exercise routine. Always check with your doctor if you have any concerns about your exercise program.

Keep enjoying your Total Gym and here’s to achieving “the best of health!”

Until next time,

Ask Dr. Salada – Is it safe to work out when I’m sick?

We are pleased to introduce our newest contributor, Dr. Elizabeth Salada. Each month, Dr. Salada will answer your medical questions and offer her advice for living a healthier and fitter life. Read her answer to a subscriber’s question about working out when sick.

Question: How sick is too sick to work out? Will working out help me get better faster or will it prolong my illness?

Answer: When you are ill, it’s best to listen to your body when it comes to working out. If you have a fever, body aches, have been vomiting or have had a significant diarrheal illness, you really should rest and stay well hydrated. Short walks are OK but anything that elevates your heart rate for longer than a few minutes is not a good idea. Over stressing your body when it is trying to fight an illness will just prolong your recovery. It’s best to wait until your energy level has recovered completely before returning to exercise, especially aerobic activity as that can be dangerous for your heart. Always check with your doctor if you have had an unusual illness or are unsure about when to resume your workouts. Stay well and you will be able to continue working out to your heart’s content. Until next time!
